Minisymposium of the Sociolinguists on Facebook on the Indigenous Languages in the City

The focus of our panel will to involve specialists from all continents describing, discussing and assessing the presence and vitality of indigenous languages in urban settings. Although some indigenous languages are undoubtedly in great danger, others have revived or survived, and some are still widely spoken by monolingual indigenous speakers, such as in the Andes for example. We are particularly interested in how this robust vitality is maintained, emulated, transformed and/or hybridised in urban settings because of migration and pressures of globalisation.

 Formed some 4 years ago, our 500 member group,  "Sociolinguists on Facebook" decided it was high time to have a session of its own, first to meet personally and also because our ongoing discussions on indigenous languages have proved to be quite effective and timely in addressing an international arena of colleagues.

Berlin, as a cosmopolitan city is the perfect setting in which such a session should take place and the general topic of this year seemed to suit our particular 'community of interest' perfectly. We deliberately chose a rather provocative topic.
